I've oft lamented the unprecedented access this President has provided to the evangelical crowd. Unfortunately the "born again" types are easier manipulated by guilt for past "sins".
I'll be quite blunt.
Religion is all about controlling people. It always has been. It serves a purpose in that some people, who would otherwise be inclined to violence, are better off controlled. Society is served by religion--or more accurately by the fear religion provides to those seeking some form of immortality.
If you want to find spirituality, look within.
Immortality is a misnomer. We are all immortal. In a relative universe one moment and an eternity are interchangeable. In the time it takes to read this post a dozen eternities have passed somewhere in the universe. Death and birth are synonyms simply seen from different perspectives.
I'll agree with you on this one. It's about time the Republicans speak up. However, the evangelical crowd's influence will most likely depart with Bush. Cheney et al, have not the same "weakness". Most are just riding it out and bite their tongue when ID or some other evangelical agenda is mentioned.
