Catholic schools were all about conformity. Right down to the uniforms.
I'm as into freedom, creativity, and downright childish anarchy as anyone. But I do believe that in a learning environment you need to provide such structure to the children, and in that regard the Catholic schools were great. Yes looking back it seems almost as if they were NASI's trying to raise a new generation of straight laced conformers...But in reality, all they were doing was providing a structured environment for learning. Something that is all to often taboo out in the "Secular world".
What's funny is now that I am older and have had an opportunity to know some Priests, Christian Ministers, and such in a more social environment, I realize that most religous people aren't really the snobbish strict disiplinarians that the pop culture loves to potray them as.
Certainly there are a few who fit into that mold, and who take potraying that role to the extreme...but most are pretty normal people who just have a job description that requires them to preach on Sunday, disipline school kids (who really do need the structure in their lives), and visit hospitals, nursing homes, and even prisons to provide religious comfort for the sick, dying, and needy. In short, they are real good people who often get an undeserved bad rap.
I'm a Christian, and I'll be really pissed at the Holy Trinity and Communion of Saints if I get to heaven and there is nothing but straight laced Christians there! In my belief system, all good people are welcome to make the trip. the only ones who won't are the truely evil who have chosen Greed, Lust, Hatred, etc... over goodness.
