If the Jewish families with children in the public schools in my community -- all five of them -- objected to their children being taught and required to sing religious Christmas carols as part of music class, and you lived here, which of the following actions would you take? Choose all that apply.
I would:
a) support their choice and ask that non-Christian holiday songs be taught instead.
b) support their choice and suggest that their children be excluded from music class for the month of December.
c) explain to them that their views are minority views and the majority opinion trumps the minority opinion, regardless of the First Amendment.
d) suggest to your congregation that the church sponsor a Christian music celebration on a day not the same as the school performance, and support non-sectarian music in the schools.
d) call them killjoys and tell them that they are oppressing Christians.
e) keep quiet and hope the whole thing would blow over.
It's the small, practical, day-to-day hurts that erode our ability to live together. If it weren't for these, extremists would have no purchase on a major political party. Any of them.
