But I was a virtual saint back then! See my halo and wings?
Seriously, as the son of a mother who taught fourth grade for 42 years (she's fine - the medication is doing wonders), and having had a stint as a substitute teacher in public school, I know what you are saying. But I guess I nievely thought that the nuns and priests were a bit beyond the usual reasons for teachers and their actions untowith. Having a higher purpose and all.
But you are right, they seemed to spend most of their time trying not to slap the bejeezus out of all us mouthy kids (and sometimes failing - this was the 1970s, after all). Though my troublemaking usually took the form of debates on evolution and God's existence with the nuns. Oh yeah, they loved me. But I had sincere questions I wasn't getting real answers to. Even my devout mother eventually told me to just shut up and believe (not those exact words, but that is what they boiled down to).
Sadly for them, even by that time I had read enough science fiction to know that any society or leadership that told you to accept their word and law on faith and not to look too closely at the men behind the curtains was usually a controlling totalitarianship. And wasn't it always one man who saw the reality of things who had to fight the system and wake up the rest?
All I need now is a long black leather jacket and some cool Ray Bans, plus a whole lotta red pills....
