The Seal of the Prophets

Muslims call Mohammed this because they believe that he was the last to receive direct revelation from God, "Allah" in Arabic. According to Islam, there have been no more prophets since Mohammed.

He was also a political and military leader, skills which he developed in response to rejection and religious persecution of his followers by the ruling Arabs in the city of Mecca. In this way his role resembles that of Moses and David, but not of Job or Jesus, all of whom are considered prophets in the Muslim tradition. Find a partial list of Muslim prophets here.

After Mohammed's death there were religio-political splits in Islam, the largest and oldest being the one between Sunni and Shi'a, but consistent with all schools is the belief that Mohammed was the last and greatest leader whom God educated explicitly with unique revelation of His will, recorded in the Q'uran.
