I hope you're right. But in my more pessimistic moods, I believe you may have an insurmountable blind spot on human nature that I don't really know how to work around. If we were talking zoology, we'd be discussing the theory that when the lions saw the beautiful limping fawn, they'd feel sorry for it and leave it alone.
Too many radicals see our tolerance as a weak spot. Like the insurgent who was passed through a checkpoint when he told an American soldier he was rushing to a hospital. His assessment? We're "stupid."
When Christianity was working through its own psycho period, the weapon of choice was the sword. In the age of nuclear weapons, I don't know how much patience we can afford.

- there is some debate about Muhammed yes...but most sources agree he owned slaves, made war, ordered assasinations, and killed jews.
