People want the same basic things. Culture provides a way of looking at those desires.
Some of the people in Muslim nations do want to hurt us, and they will try.
Most Muslims want a good life with rewarding work, pleasant surroundings, and happy, healthy family and friends. Just like we do. There is no reason to treat them like cancer.
Re: Rome: The Empire in the West was only a memory by the time Attila reached Rome. Rome is widely viewed to have fallen in the popular imagination due to Cecil B. DeMille movies showing hordes of barbarians at the gates. The fact is, Rome was already collapsing from the inside long before Germanic tribes began their raids, which was long before the Huns arrived. Rome had gotten soft and lazy, and had forgotten its founding principles.
You want to help defend against the fall of the West? Read. Vote, even in the primaries. Go to public meetings. Pick a charity and contribute to it. Write to the newspaper. Join a community organization. Volunteer at a local school. Do the things that strengthen the West: uphold its institutions. Live its principles. They can only knock us down if we've lost our balance to begin with.

- there is some debate about Muhammed yes...but most sources agree he owned slaves, made war, ordered assasinations, and killed jews.
