I don't take any "comfort" in this at all.

And I see a lot more "Christian" signs of this type up close and personal than you do. One of my neighbors, a nurse, works at a women's clinic in a nearby city that was bombed by anti-abortion activists. (No one was hurt.) Yes, it was only one bomb. How many bombs does it take to terrorize a market? Is that any different?

I mentioned London because I could put all the signs in one location. This says something too.

Christian preachers can pretty much vomit hatred just as well as Muslims. And some of them do. People yell at them here because we've formed the habit of yelling when we disagree. But we have our colonial history farther behind us than the Muslim nations do, and we had a history of self-government that preceded our rejection of colonial status. If we can hold the world together long enough, Muslim peoples will learn more about the thoughtfulness involved in self-determination.

To get back to London: Don't you find it at least a little interesting that the protesters there had enough confidence that they wouldn't be beaten up to carry those detestable signs? Do you think that all the Muslims living in Britain who weren't there are unaware of the civil liberties that allow them to speak out, even in grossly objectionable ways? Do you think the exposure isn't having an effect? And if you don't -- pardon the jump -- what the hell are we doing, trying to expose people to the same thing in Iraq?

You are trying to make "their" hate worse than "our" hate, and it's not. It's just hate. The ultimate WMD.
