If he flips and caucuses with the republicans, it would hand the Senate back to the Republicans. Libermann has a cat-bird seat, at least until the next election. I expect he'll use it to full effect to keep his name in the media in prep for the 2008 presidential race. If the Senate majority of the Democrats increases, or if the republicans take back over- either way they won't need him. Thats when you'll see the long knives come out.
However, I suspect he's still pinning his future on a presidential run by then, and may very well not care about either of those scenarios. If he runs a successful ticket in 2008, the democrats will have to make peace, on Libermanns terms, and he will avoid the long knives. I can't stand Libermanns positions and politics, however the political craftsmanship hes shown make me believe he would be an effective and skillful president. I would hate to be put in the position to have to vote for him, but he'd make an effective president given what I've seen.
If his presidential campaign flops, though, expect Libermann to fade into obscurity without the backing of his party.

The Democrats can't push Libermann too hard, though
