As a liberal, I believe there is a natural tendency in human societies to improve, just as there is a natural tendency in physical and biological systems to higher complexity. Left to itself, matter and energy will create more complex structures in space and time. So do human communities. As long as there is room to grow and plenty of energy available, the dynamic is built into us just as the complexity of a snowflake is the result of the shape of the water molecule.
