Human beings have a ground state of collectivist squalor, not of peace, freedom, and prosperity. Constant vigilance is needed to keep us out of that state. The "slippery slope" only runs in one direction, unfortunately.
Any historian looking back at the last three thousand years of human history would probably wonder why this would be considered any kind of radical insight.
