My post assumed a run as a democat: but here is a scenario that could pickle your soul.... Say he does not do well and/or is not nominated as the Democratic presidential candidate. What if he then declares Independent again and puts on a presidentiial bid? Suppose he panders to the 'Conservacratic' vote that turned the tide in this last election, swings those guys away from the Democratic party? President Jeb (/Frist/McCain/Powell/Rice/Etc) in 2008?
