What I said:
It's astounding that liberals can be driven into near-epilepsy by an American president who mentions God just a little too often, but smile and nod like lobotomy patients when it's pointed out that the leadership of Iran, currently working feverishly on A-bombs, is enthusiasticially and publicly a believer in goals reached through an all-consuming apocalypse.
Am I wrong? Here and elsewhere, you'd be astonished at how the terrifying pronouncements of the Iranian leadership or others are simply shrugged off--justified as "bombast," "playing to their audience," or "bad translations" (the latter despite being translated by professionals).
Yet these same people can go on for hours, based on some off-hand quote, about how Bush and the Evil Republicans are going to have us all living in a rights-free theocracy any day now.
This behaviour is perfectly consistent with the "safe enemy" theory I've discussed in the past, where it's so much more comforting to believe the problems in the world are home-grown, something you can vote out, and something you can safely rail against without fear of retribution.
