Silly projections

If you look around the board, assuming that all would be sweetness and light in the Middle East if we just left it alone is just as much projecting an "unknowable future" as anything I write.

And frankly, given Saddam's long record of invading neighboring nations, developing and using WMD (including two separate and sequential attempts to build nuclear weapons), supporting terrorist attacks on Israel and other nations, annihilating his own citizens, and all the rest, I would bet a bit more money on my vision of a "let Saddam be" future than yours.

Or maybe you think that the status quo at the time of the invasion was stable? We had "no fly" air patrols over hostile territory by U.S. forces based in Saudi Arabia, the existence of which inspired al Qaeda's creation and their attacks on our nation. There were sanctions that--according to the U.N.--were killing thousands of Iraqis a month. There were collapsing trade restrictions, cheerfully ignored by the U.N., greedy nations, and corporations. And there was a weapons infrastructure that, according to Duelfer's report, was only waiting for the sanction heat to die down to recreate Saddam's weapons programs once again. Doesn't ANYONE ever wonder why Saddam had hundreds of weapons scientists still hanging on the payroll?

The anti-war factions are so obsessed with the current situation that everything that was going on before the war started is treated as though it were frozen in amber. For every Iraqi who has lost someone in the current war, there are ten to twenty who had lost someone from Saddam's previous wars and abuses.
