Well said, ER!
Cohen wrote an interesting article in the IHT or the NYT (not free online yet) where he shows some interesting comparisons with Vietnam.
Vietnam was backed by China at the time, when the US thought by democratizing Vietnam, the domino theory would see democracy coming back in the area....but it's not what happened.....However, Vietnam changed on its own, thanks to China's help.
Today, Iran is backing Iraq a bit like China did Vietnam. Iran is increasing its influence in the area (quite the contrary to the domino theory hoped for by invading Iraq).
I would dream seeing Baker advise Bush to pay a visit to Ahmadinejad, just like Nixon met Mao.
Why not for instance let democratically elected leaders impose jihad in Iraq and other countries (if that's their agenda) in the area and see what happens when they're left alone. Sooner or later, those countries will open to the world because it's the natural way of things. And they will do it faster if left on their own.
