I'm by no means part of the original crew, but I have been here a while.
I used to frequent a board/community geared towards astronomy, cosmology and space exploration.
One day it disappeared, stranding everyone. Myself and a few others tried to put up a rescue board and pull in survivors. It didn't work.
Here's the strange part. The rescue board was set up on a freebie web space called discserver, com
One day while I was trying to list the site on various search engines to generate more hits, ( I was in way over my head, this was just before Google became the 800 pound gorilla) I accidentally discovered that by varying the last digit in the numeric suffix of the URL, I could browse other discserver.com discussion boards.
Out of boredom I perused a few, and I think the third or fourth one was the Space Science BBS.
I was hooked immediately.
My first post on that board was titled: Just Add Water. (using the handle O'Neil)
I was inspired by a space.com article citing a study by researchers who proposed Martian volcanoes had periodically Terra-formed the planet on a short term basis.
I got flamed by Grondine right off the bat! :) :)
In the acrimonious political environment following the events of September 11, 2001, I did some flaming too.
It was not my finest hour.
I am a proud conservative American, but would prefer to leave politics at the door of the Zone.
And I also understand why that can never be.
I love this place, and the good it produces, transcends all of our more base natures.
Long live the Zone.
