"I Am Legend" scenario

Remember, the protagonist in this movie is basically nuts. Anybody with half a brain in that situation would blow town. You can go a long way between a sunrise and a sunset, and there would be many other places in the U.S. a lot more defensible than a house with boarded-up windows in the middle of a city full of places that are dark all day. He's so consumed by his past that he can't even bring himself to move out of his home and into someplace else in New York that has a bit more of a fortress aspect to it.

In the movie, he's set up as a medical scientist who believes he has to stay in a vampire zone in order to cure the disease, which makes him somewhat less nuts, but it's implied at the end of the movie that this enclave up north is doing the same kind of work and in a much safer place.

I haven't seen "Omega Man" in a long time, but as I recall, his only motivation for staying put was sheer stubborness. Unlike the hero of the current movie, the "Omega Man" vampires were all intelligent, and knew exactly where he lived. Charlton Heston's home was surrounded by powerful lights and defenses, and he was basically under seige every night.
