I'm aware of this

>"It hasn't been that long since the Southeastern mountains had a lot of almost completely self-reliant farmers and hunters living there."

I've read quite a bit about the history here in the Blue Ridge/Appalachians. The winters were bitter cold and they used slaves,... and clearing land, getting wood cut for the winter and getting crops in in the spring were paramount. North of here is a depressed area. Some of the towns have been abandoned since the depression. Not to worry though. Developers are in to clean things up.

I realized after dealing with power outages in south Florida after several hurricanes in a row and watching the National Guard stand at banks and at the front of Home Depot, that I wanted to be closer to a smaller population that has locally grown fruits and vegetables at their markets and clean water from their wells. People here are kinder, friendlier, more helpful here. There are roadside stands where you pick what you want and throw money in a jar.
There are abattoirs where you can go and get fresh untainted meats and sausage.

And half the people I meet up here.......are from Florida.
Have you seen the movie "Cold Mountain"? That's about 20 miles SW from here.
