First I would secure shelter and food supplies. Gasoline and vehicles would be easy, but unattended electrical plants would likely soon break down and cease functioning. Nuclear plants would also be dangerous to be around. So I would find and map places with electrical resources still functioning and set up homes in these areas. I would hit the local Wal-Marts and get generators, etc.
I would set up living facilities in temperate climates with no real winter and mild summers - similar to San Diego, CA.
At this point, with years of non-perishable food & medical supplies secured and homes with self-sustaining electrical power, I would start trying to find out what killed everyone and if there were survivors, I would do this clandestinely, as it would be very dangerous to broadcast one's location in a post apocalytic world.
I would visit DC, stop at a few places I know where useful info can be obtained and then access some of the satellite operations stations outside Langely to see if I could observe movement or activities with th scope of the satellites. These facilities would eventually power down and so such monitoring would have to be performed early. Due to certain protocols, there is no guarantee of actual access to the imagery - a lot would have to do with persistance and luck.
Sure, I would accumulate a number of vehicles and protect them from inclement weather in various locations. I would also avoid traveling in a single vehicle. I would always tow a working vehicle behind me and probably drive a flatbed tow truck when crossing long, remote roads, etc. Petrol stations' pumps would soon seize operation when the electricity goes down and so one would set up and map tankers, working gas stations and those where one can access the underground tanks at strategic intervals. Phone service would soon breakdown, and with no one else alive only automated responses would work anyway. Eventually, one would equip one's vehicle fleet and homes with working shortwave and CB radio equipment.
I would find good libraries and make sure their books were protected from the elements. I would stock my homes with some of the finest reading material. Television, cable and radio would be off the air almost immediately. The internet would also soon break down and so DVDs, VHS tapes, CDs and most importantly BOOKS would be one's companions and link to humanity. I'd look for a working solar company's warehouse and see if it was feasible to transport and install solar power rigs on selected homes and facilities.
It would be a LOT of work. Frustration would be severe and one's sense of humor would help one survive. Folks with no humor would likely not survive. Eventually, one would settle down in an area where the climate is mild and one need not fear being stranded without transportation or nearby food & shelter.
I would keep meticulous records and portable tape recorders to listen to my own notes and ideas.
Growing old on such a world would be no fun, but it wouldn't be that impossible to live a normal lifespan. It would be a more physically stressful life, with more physical labor than before and one would have to be very careful at the same time.
After I was certain the Earth was empty of all other humanity, then I would contact some of those dimensional travelers I know, invite them to an abandoned hell-world because most of the galactic laws quarantining humanity from such contact would no longer have functional provisions and/or quid pro quos.

- Reading your post I am certain you would not survive long
- Your scenario sounds about right

- Very logical
- I'd pack up the rifles & handguns...
- I would scourer the earth
- I'd be pretty sick from whatever killed the other 4 billion.

- Survival instinct is high in most of our species.
