Knowledge is the key to survival.
In San Diego, folks could last a long, long time. Even without electric plants humming. Establishing solar power, learning how to turn pool water into drinking water or even eventually how to desalinate ocean water for drinking would be on the learning curve.
Food for the masses would be the greatest issue, but in San Diego, everyone would rip out their lawns and TRUE gardening would replace meaningless turf. An orange tree with fertilizer every week can produce enough fruit to feed to provide the fruit needs of a small family.
Humans are adaptable. Tell them they must plant fruit trees and other vegetables and crops, and they will do so. Fishing would become the primary meat sustenance for coastal dwellers just as it was for our ancestors.
This notion that all our technology benefits would somehow be lost is ridiculous. That knowledge is out there and simply must be acquired and TAUGHT. Farming is not rocket science. It's simply a certain amount of knowledge, labor and perserverance. Boats could still fish, even without motors - using sails like they used to rely on. However, our technology would soon be converted to adapt to our needs.
This question is similar to those on psychological profile tests they give to field agents applying at most intelligence agencies. They want to see if you are a survivor or a quitter - an optimist or a fatalist. They weed out the fatalists who would jeopardize a mission or crack under imprisonment. In that sense, it has value even if it is never likely to come to fruition - merely as a tool to identify the two types of reactions to drastic developments.
It'll will be the optimists who turn the dark day into a bright one. Man would never have emrged from the dark ages without individualistic leader types who see the darkness, but forge ahead.
Man will TRIUMPH!!!!!!!!!!!!!
;-)

- Very logical
- I'd pack up the rifles & handguns...
- I would scourer the earth
- I'd be pretty sick from whatever killed the other 4 billion.
