After about 24 hours without lights, most people would decide it wasn't nearly as much fun any more.
I remember when Perth turned on all its lights for John Glenn. Back when Glenn flew, progress wasn't a dirty word yet.
I still see a brightly lit city as a thing of beauty, a sign of human achievement and prosperity.
I remember the photo of the great cities of Earth by night from space, and how it made me feel good. I also remember a lot of comments about it (not here) about how this was a bad thing.
Earth Hour. Feh. I have half a mind to go out and switch on my porch light (it's normally motion sensing).
In "Atlas Shrugged," the fall of civilization was symbolized by the lights of New York going out. Prior to that in the book, a town lit by candlelight was considered a thing of horror.
Still, like the colored ribbons, this is mostly about making people feel righteous with little actual effort, so I suppose it's nothing to get exercised about.
