...is if you miss, you don't get another shot.
She could actually handle a handgun, having shot a couple competitively. So far, she hasn't expressed any desire to get a concealed carry permit, but that wouldn't be a problem. The whole family has been investigated to a fare-thee-well because of various aspects of employment (her dad, me, and her older sister). We also know about those special purses with a spot to secure a handgun to avoid fumbling around. Unfortunately, one must shoot through the purse for maximum effect, but there you go.
She really couldn't bring a pistol in to work, though, so it's a moot point.
Seriously, the best defense for a woman is to make life difficult for the assailant. Typically, those who prey on women look for women who appear distracted or uncertain, who isolate themselves, and who provide convenient handles on their persons, the better to be grabbed with. Women who supply none of those will be passed over for those who do. My girl has opted for a variation on Teddy Roosevelt's foreign policy theory: "Speak on your cell phone in a secure place, walk tall with purpose, and carry a big stick".
