Do we turn off the traffic lights too?

Looking at the WWF website, their long-term suggestions, like turning off appliances not being used, aren't so bad. I know I've repeated the I'm Not Made Of Money Litany to my kids probably thousands of times: "Turn the lights off when you leave the room. Don't stand there with the refrigerator open. If nobody's watching the TV, turn it off. Close the door when the heat's [air conditioning's] on." Save energy, save money, do a little to save the planet: works for me.

The big dramatic gesture of turning all the lights off, though, strikes me as dim. When I was a kid living in NY, the Northeast Blackout of 1965 took down the grid in New England, New York State and City, and parts of PA, an instructive experience. No lights is no picnic. Anyone who thinks this is a good idea should try walking down a city street in the dark. Vermin of all kinds find darkness encouraging. That's why we have lights in the first place.
