Exactly.
Life, laughter, love, food, drink, warmth, travel, communication, progress, a world full of unprecedented wonders and it's all too much for them. Better to sit in the darkness and curse the lighting of even a single candle.

Is that what they aspire to as they sit at home quietly in that seductive, undemanding cloak of blackness? To switch off civilisation and shuffle away into the perpetual tenebrosity dragging everyone else behind them?
The conditions are ripe for the spread of this insanity. Indeed, it is spreading now. How long will it be, I wonder, before some official body somewhere floats the idea of mandatory blackouts and curfews? "The voluntary approach" they will proclaim, "has not worked".
Let there be light has been replaced by let there be dark.
And he's right. The insanity WILL spread. And the governments, as always, will be walking hand in hand with the looters. Heavy fines, more costly electricity and electric companines jacking up rates are things to look forward to because of these righteous nihilists.
Besides the mentally unfit aspect to it that he addresses, there's another evil to it that can be clearly felt.
The threat of mob violence and condemnation by your neighbors is part of this as well - because these groups chose a time when participation would be visible.
How many folks will switch out lights simply because of fear? Follow the mob, even if you disagree to save your own property and to keep from attracting attention to yourself.
It's like we have entered the middle ages and those who have lights on can expect to be stoned and ostracized. If you do not willfully go along with the forces of darkness then you shall live in fear until they come for you.
To heck with that. Each of these groups need to be put under the microscope, their members and their founders, and see exactly who they are, who's paying them and which of John Q. Public's enemies is behind this. It should be illuminating.
Those who bring neighbor against neighbor and invoke the mob...soon need fear it.
