It's programming.

Humans for the first part of their lives are programmed to be competitive, to seek ego gratification, sort of a "me first" attitude. It's only later that such values as friendship, respect, compassion, empathy come along again, and folks want to be a "worker among workers". Up 'til then it's fight, beat the hell out of the other guy, it's us or them, that sort of thing. Just check our boards.

So, the implications for long-term, multi-generational societies, with no room for the egomaniac and little for the loner, confined to smaller areas are grim. Over time there would be someone who came along and decided that some threat required overriding the rules established for the group at it's inception, split it into camps, and it would be over.

We've seen it before. I'm afraid it's in the genes.
