Mormonism, while Christian, differs quite a bit from all the other Christian religions. (I'm going to simply cover a variety of topics presented here, rather than try to track down each comment in the thread individually)
First of all, we don't see religious text as infallible. One of our articles of faith states that we don't believe the bible to be translated perfectly. We see truth or knowledge as something each generation gets a clearer picture of as new understanding is applied and received. My own view is that judging beliefs of people in the past, be it 4000 years or 40 years, needs to be done with eyes to the understanding of that time, not judgements from the wisdom of our own time.
"I am THAT I AM" emphasis on the THAT with the second I AM being a title always made more sense to me than the snarky "I am that I am" depiction of the Cecil B Demilles Ten Commandments. I AM being a synonym or statement for one who is self sustaining.
Mormonism doesn't believe deity has carte blanche powers, but that the process of becoming deity will provide the rules by which deity operate. It sounds strange, but we believe in a God who binds himself to the commandments as much as his worshipers bind themselves to Him when they choose to follow the commandments. When God says X will happen if Y, then God is bound to provide X when presented with Y. While He alone sets the conditions, he must come through with the results and will do so in His own way. Those ways may be of a method which is hard for us to grasp.
