YES!

I owe society for the benefits my father earned in Burma which I later benefitted from even though I wasn't even born. And society owes me for my service in Vietnam, even though most of my fellow citizens weren't born. No, I didn't fight, but neither did my father. And we both showed up, even though we both had better things to do at the time. Society is a network of obligations and debts and cooperation, it extends through space and time, it is a social collective of free individuals, not a public ball park where only the company team is allowed to play.

We owe our kids an education, they are our future, we owe our aged a dignified retirement, they built our present. We owe everyone health care and peace, justice and security and opportunity. We also owe our society, to do our jobs, obey the laws, pay our taxes, fight its wars, participate in government. Maybe we can't all get everything we want, or even deserve, and maybe we can't afford it, we understand that; but we are obligated to share as much as we can, because in the long run, everyone benefits. I don't have kids, but I gladly pay school taxes, does that mean I favor a "nanny state"? You conservatives call it redistibuting the wealth, I call it meeting our obligations.
