Why label yourself?

What is it about human nature that so compels us to firmly identify with one group or another? I firmly reject the label "liberal" because that ignores the Libertarian viewpoints I hold about government interference with our private property, our choice of recreational drugs, and travel restrictions. It also ignores my distaste for the abuses of labor unions and overbearing environmentalists. I'm also a firm believer that everyone deserves an equal chance at success in life and some lifelines during peril but there's a limit on bailouts if the person shows no personal responsibility. That last part is right out of the conservative handbook.

Yet there are core values of the Democratic Party and most self-identifying "liberals" that I find very compelling, compassion for others, dedication to the Earth, basic social structure, etc.

So why should I take on a label? Why can't we simply feel we're open-minded, free thinkers that move left or right depending on the current needs of our society? Right now the more liberal viewpoint makes so much more sense after our country moved so far right.

I'm curious what traits you possess that make you define yourself so narrowly as conservative? I just don't get the impression from your posts that you would ever be a John Birch Society member.
