One tiny example.

Every year, the cost of mailing a first class letter goes up by a penny or two, and service deteriorates. This happens in spite of the fact that first class mail actually pays for itself, or turns a profit.

Every year, I find more and more junk mail--advertising, in my mailbox. This goes at a special loss-leader rate that makes it very profitable for business to advertise this way. Most of it, of course, is not even opened. A terrible waste of tax dollars and natural resources.A variety of other mail categories exist strictly for the benefit of business. And businesses that operate through the mail constantly lobby to keep these rates low.

The inescapable conclusion is that the post office is a giant Federal agency that exists primarily to provide cheap postal services to the private sector, at the taxpayer's expense.

By itself, this might not be too bad; after all, one of the legitimate purposes of government is to facilitate commerce. But what really steams me is how the postal service is constantly being dissed by the conservative fringe for its waste and inefficiency (mostly because the blue-collar types who work there get good pay). Let them FedEX and UPS their Spam if they feel that strongly about it.
