You are quite correct about the services available.
If you are in a category that does not qualify for medicaid I can understand that it could become very demeaning to seek refuge in banlruptcy and the protection of homestead exemption to stonewall the collectors that would come after you. Some of the help available pretty much requires that you put pride and self respect on the back burner. Of course, if you lose your job and don't have the wherewithall to weather the storm you are probably going to have lots of problems sooner than the health care problems. In my state we have a good BCBS individual plan available to anyone uninsured for less than $150 per month if cobra is too much to keep up.
If I were unable to work because of health I would definitely apply for SS disability it is available on a temporary basis and is retroactive to the beginning of your health problems.
