Value is often an illusion.

Nobody needs gold. Nobody. It does nothing. But millions are spent finding-mining-refining-trading it.

Like diamonds. Sure, there are useful as an abrasive, but otherwise, just a shiny bauble. Look into the diamond cartel sometime. It's created demand. The diamond engagement ring was a creation of marketing. Nobody needs a diamond ring. It is said that a man should spend a month's salary for an engagement ring for his love. Why?

Because it is an illusion of wealth.

What is value? Mostly perception. Unless it is food or shelter or heat. And even then. Remember Enron?
