Your question is a fair one on the surface. Keep in mind things like worker safety and anti fraud laws obviously blanket the entire economy and thus your definition of "controlling role" needs to be clarified to that extent. Clearly the government has too much of a role in farm subsidies. There needs to be some for sure to keep basic food staple prices stable. What we have now is a massive welfare program for millionaire farmers.
Do you want a list of all the industries in America that I don't want run by the government? Here's a few: mining, forestry, farming, grazing, hunting, fishing, packaging and processing of the raw materials, metal working and smelting, textile production, chemical and engineering industries, aerospace manufacturing, energy utilities, engineering, breweries and bottlers, construction, and shipbuilding, retail and wholesale sales, transportation and distribution, entertainment (movies, television, radio, music, theater, etc.), restaurants, clerical services, media, tourism, insurance, banking, law, scientific research (stem cell research!), information technology, etc etc.
But then, none of these are "run by government.| Unless you consider any regulations the equivalent of total government control? Your problem Tom is you can't understand that most people who support the free market also support common sense regulations. That's what is called middle ground.
