Moving, again over many years, to a more privatized system would take a lot of power and loot away from the government. They will tell you about the greed of the private system, but somehow overlook their own motivations in this matter.
I own my private IRA retirement accounts. I can move the money where I want, when I want, inside the account. It would be important that any private accounts be controlled by the individual. If the government gets to pick the stocks, the potential for corruption is huge.
In an emergency, I can take money out (with a penalty). If I die, my family gets it all.
Properly handled, private retirement accounts are not that risky. Young people would invest in things that grow more rapidly over time, like stocks, while people nearing retirement would shift their investments into more stable and safer investments. It's what I've been doing for a while now.
