That assumes you actually make it to Mars
The life support system has to be designed for the worst case scenario. On a Mars mission, that would probably be an abort to Earth without a landing on Mars. In other words, they have to be able to survive the entire mission without access to Martian resources. This covers all expendables such as life support, propellant, etc.
