Mark,
I think that the two habs are kind of fun and I do appreciate the value of trial and error.
My father was an aerospace engineer. He worked on Polaris, Apollo, Skylab and the Space Shuttle. He often said that the reason the American space program succeeded was because of the multiple back-up systems employed. Were he alive today, I am certain he would echo your remarks about the value of trial and error - testing and retesting - in spacecraft engineering. He would also thoroughly enjoy Zubrin's habs.
I just think we need to put these efforts into their proper perspective - their science and engineering value is limited by the fact that these are not very accurate simulations. Now put one of these puppies on the moon and, perhaps, the experience begins to more closely approximate a mission to Mars.
Regards,
Donald
