<"Develop a mission Mars by developing the experience and technologies on ISS and on the moon. It WILL be cheaper and quicker in the long run than attempting the full monte in one fell swoop."
Let's see, the cost of Mars Direct is $25 - $50 Billion... PERIOD, that's it for 3 long term missions (every mission thereafter costing $3 Billion)..
Well that's Zurbin's approach and the way I favor.. Let's look at the Krupp Approach:
1. Space Station > $100 Billion
2. Lunar Base another $100 Billion
3. Over Blown Mars Mission, Flags and Footprint for about another $100 Billion (at least) Of course, it could be a lot more as you probably will want to (unnecessary) use the space station as a prep area and the moon as a launch site.. Better yet, let's call off a Mars Mission until we mine the moon for H2O (that'll only cost another 1/2 trillion dollars and delay Mars for 30 or 50 more years)..
I hope you're better at budgeting cash for your county than you are planning space missions...
