Trying to avoid this particular - - -

pissing match, it's difficult to understand the Mars Society's actions with their habitats.

On the one hand, it's nice to have something in front of the public to keep Mars on their minds.

On the other, as I recall they had problems with suit-to-suit communications and with their GPSs. (GPSs on Mars?)

It would seem to me that those kinds of things would not be particularly encouraging to the general populace. And, they are amateurish, silly problems.

I guess I can understand folks doing it, I would, but I can't understand the media taking it at all seriously. What I've seen ranks about in the middle of Saturday morning cartoons. Some of those are pretty good, some not.

I'd rather see them spend the money trying to generate public support for a Mars mission, funding "studies" showing what could be gained, the implications of finding life on Mars, or not, what it would cost in relationship to the Shuttle and ISS, collecting red pennies from kids to visit the Red Planet, and so on.

Without knowing more than I do, it seems to be pure PR, and bad PR at that.
