The waves of Irish, Italian, and other immigrants that came to America in the past worked hard to assimilate into our country. While many still held ties and love for their home countries, they came here wanting to be Americans. That's what was meant by the phase "melting pot." Today, there's less of a tendency for that to happen.
The extremist elements within the Muslim community don't want to assimiliate. They want to bring all aspects of their culture with them. Check into the increased incident of rape in many European countries largely due to the mindset that "she had it coming" for going out without a male escort.
You mentioned that you're an immigrant yourself. Perhaps you have not had a chance to study much of our history. I suggest you do before you make a bigger fool of yourself.
