Well that still doesn't answer the question of why they didn't form a commune. There have been plenty of left wing communes. Whenever you have a system based on winners and looters at least 1/3 of the population is going to be unhappy with that system and want to adjust it so they win more. Even if you get a 100,000 of the most rabid right wingers and put them in a commune in 6 months 1/3 of them will be democrats. Why? Because the smartest ones will grab most of the wealth and the dumber ones have to choose between always being poor and changing the system. You might say that the poor will still be doing all right through trickle down benefits but envy will still cause them to switch. If we put you in the commune in a wheelchair you would be a socialist in a year. In fact capitalists make the best socialist because they know how to make a system deliver what they want.
Like the old saying the problem is that half the population is of above average intelligence and ability.
