re: Oh, but it does.

I think you and Fox are probably right, in that Americans would stiffen up in the face of danger instead of knuckle under to it. Maybe the terrorists know this too--I hope--and the more I thought about it the more I suspect that the next targets will be Britain and Italy. I guess we'll see.

It is naive to treat these kind of attacks as solely a "criminal investigation" instead of a war. These people are usually based outside the nations attacked, and hidden among sympathetic population, or even sympathetic nations. I have no idea how someone from the FBI or Interpol would have managed a criminal investigation, without military action, inside Afghanistan after 9/11. These people need to be rooted out of their holes, and I'm afraid that takes soldiers.

There is a role for standard criminal techniques, particularly in rooting out cells inside countries that do not support the terrorists. We have had success in this in America, and Europe, although some nations oppose our military actions, have done a very good job in capturing terrorists inside Europe, and cooperating with American authorities in this. Unfortunately, this doesn't make a lot of headlines.
