It wasn't American foreign policy to support the establishment of a Jewish state, we have been dragged into this situation- we generally have a tendency to be dragged into these types of situations.
The Truman administration took a lead role in the UN to get the 1947 vote for partition passed. According to Clark Clifford, "It was because the White House was for it that it went through."
One of Truman's army buddies, Eddie Jacobson, said Truman told him that "he [Truman] and he alone was responsible for swinging the votes of several delegations."
Chaim Weizmann wrote to Truman: "The choice for our people, Mr. President, is between statehood and extermination. History and providence have placed this issue in your hands and I am confident that you will yet decide it in the spirit of moral law."
When the new Jewish state was declared at midnight, May 14th, the U.S. gave it de facto recognition 11 minutes later, the first nation to do so.
