I have been hearing and reading that there is "nothing to be done" except to abandon our legal principles, imprison people forever without charge, let alone trial, and create secret prisons because we are afraid.
We sound more and more like the ancien regime all the time.
Prisons should be open for inspection. Individuals should be able to sit, stand and lie down in their cells, as well as practice their religion unimpeded. People held in these prisons have the right to timely adjudication of their cases. Their families ought to be able to know where and how they are.
Revolutions have been fought to gain these things. If the rules are suddenly "different", then it's our job to find out how to make the rules fit the people, not the people fit the rules. But instead, we throw up our hands and say it's just a bad situation, and isn't that too bad. Now, what's on the Golf Channel?
When the United States does not act on the principles it claims to stand for, it gives heart to the creeps of this world. If not us, then who? If not now, then when?
