All the things you mention were only done after great yelling. This indicates that those in charge think that they are entitled to treat people however they want because some of them are considered less human than others. To paraphrase Rhett Butler, they aren't the least bit sorry they did those things, but are very sorry they were caught.

I know that I share responsibility for the things my government does. This is not an acceptable standard for me. Even our enemies are human. It's easy to be good to our friends; true humanity is measured in the way we treat strangers and the way we treat our enemies. If we claim to stand for goodness and truth, this fundamental principle cannot be nullified. I want us to stand for goodness and truth. How about you?
