gee Nick, in this part of Melbourne the streets are crawling with SUVs, jeeps, landrovers and rangerovers, especially late afternoons - they're all over the bloody place. Even worse than Sydney, which I wouldn't have thought possible. And as for 'big houses' - don't get me started ..

Australia must rank as one of the most selfish, wasteful and materialistic society on Earth - at least en par with the US. Maybe more so because this country doesn't give a shit for social capital and cohesion, for its public assets, and for any sort of great ambition other than ruthlessly preserving middle and upper class security. At least the Yanks try to reach the stars. They can do that because they're not quite as gutter-cynical about the world as Australians.

Much more to the point: Carl is implying he and his family can't afford any of the options currently available to keep themselves warm this winter. They probably don't have an SUV or a 'big house' to sell. I realize your reply was directed to the society as a whole rather than to Carl alone; still - I hope NONE of them 'freeze during the next dark winter'.

Why the nastiness ? ..especially when coming from such a soulless and materialistic country like Australia.
