Fireplace insert
I have one, works like a charm. Also have a new high-efficiency gas forced-air furnace, don't turn it on anymore.
One has to be a bit industrious about finding wood, though. I manage to be fortunate enough to have dried maple available for the dragging out and sawing up,
AND
when I put the word out that I used wood for heat, people have come out of the woodwork (small play on words) to offer trees that have fallen, trees they have chopped down, etc. They're glad to get rid of the stuff without paying, and it all burns well.
