Just promise me you won't get a kerosene heater...

Those things kill a lot of people, between the carbon monoxide poisoning and the accidental fires.

If the local utility has no program to deal with customers with special needs, try the state. If they have an Office of the Aging, or any ombudsman that deals with issued concerning seniors, they can help mediate any assistance you may need.

You're smart to look into this now. These offices will be absolutely swamped with requests, come November.

Of course, there are the emergency measures: converting a living space into a bedroom that's closer to the central part of the house is one, for temporary residence only, so that more removed rooms can be closed off and heat conserved that way.

If you use an electric space heater, please make sure to use a humidifier too. Properly maintained (i.e., no mold), it will help the lungs of one and all, and keep people's nasal passages from drying out and bleeding.

If you have to crank back the heat, thermal underwear is another thing to consider. I usually only get enough so that people going outside in frigid weather are protected, but I may reconsider and get people enough to wear all the time indoors if they want to. And you know what else? Wearing hats or headscarves indoors, especially small woolen or cotton ones, helps the body conserve heat. Nightcaps, anyone?
