had I used the word "proportional" somewhere in that sentence...

...then it might be construed to mean what you took it to mean. If you take into account the sentence that preceeded it (I assume that you read both sentences), then I can't imagine how you could get that meaning, be corrected, go back and re-read it, and come away with the same interpretation.

It doesn't really matter. If you want to talk about it, fine. It's just weird to tell me I'm missing the point of something that we weren't talking about.

So let's talk about progressivity, then (I will assume I won the points about taxation being necessary at all, and that we really do derive a great many benefits from the federal govt.). An analogy:

You are out on patrol. One of your team is injured in the leg. You've stopped the bleeding, but it has weakened him some and it causes him pain to walk. Sergent takes the injured soldier's kit and passes out pieces of it to the other members of the squad to carry for him.

You carry on like this for a mile when one of the squad says, "This is too heavy. It is unfair I have to carry this guys stuff. We should all carry equal amounts for this to be fair."

Sarge says: "He can't carry as much as you because he is hurt."

Complainer says: "IT'S NOT FAIR!!!! We should all carry the same amount."

Heavy rifleman says: "Wait a minute. I have always had to lug this damn BAR around and it's not fair."

Sarge says: "You are the biggest and strongest on the team. You were picked for the BAR because you could handle more weight."

Heavy rifleman whines: "IT'S NOT FAIR!!!!!"
