Current Events » in reply to The Tooth Fairy, The Easter Bunny, and Compassionate Conservatives

Another load of bull exhaust.

1) A fundamental and passionately-fought plank of Conservatism is the destruction of all government social spending.

Find me one example of any major conservative figure proposing this.

There are plenty who see a problem with well over half of the Federal budget being dedicated solely to this function, and that's just sheer entitlements and cash redistribution, not payments for actual work done on social programs, like money spent to construct low-cost housing or things like that.

2) We who take exception to that are told (after "STFU") that we shouldn't worry, because private charities will take up the slack, and there will always be a safety net for those in need.

This canard dies with the first one.

3) According to all Conservative rhetoric on the subject, those in need possess a character flaw which renders them undeserving of aid.

Find me one example, again, of this "rhetoric," never mind tacking the word "all" to it. Still, it is an unescapable fact that, of the recipients of things like welfare, there is a significant fraction that have settled quite nicely into that culture, and hand it down to their children. Many people go on welfare until things get better. There are things like illnesses, loss of job, and many other factors that can change circumstances, and most conservatives have no problems with this, a real "safety net." But some people stay there because they don't have the initiative they need. The net turns into a hammock. Welfare reform worked. Ask yourself why.

4) Obviously, therefore, the safety net won't be created through the contributions of Conservatives.

5) Obviously, this is the "Compassionate Conservatives" way of saying "if y'all wanna go and have a damn social conscience, y'all can damn well pay for it yerselves."

See #2. You're living in a cartoon, Robert. You aren't in Lindy-land yet, but the freeway exit signs are coming up fast.
