"consumer" is an artificial term. In a free market society, there are mostly producers who trade with each other. Yes, even the guy who works as a grocery clerk or cuts your grass is a producer of value. If he wants to trade his effort for a beer, a football game, or a big car, what business is that of anyone else if he pays his own way?
The "consumerism" flap back in the old days was just one more aspect of the Left's elitism, which still oozes out of every pore today (remember the "electric toothbrush" bit?).
In my opinion, it was more about bitter envy that capitalism resulted in wealth and progress, while their beloved socialism (they still called it that back then) typically created poverty-stricken hells on earth. You see, I still remember when the clarion call for socialism was progress, industry, and prosperity. What do we have now that the world has seen what socialism actually delivers? Why, progress, industry and prosperity are Evil! Sour grapes of the first order.
The alternative to economic freedom is centralized control (euphemized as "reforms" in your post), and frankly, I don't think politicians are going to make any wiser decisions than anyone else is.
Loss of critical thinking skills among Americans represents a fundamental threat to democracy, and the responsibilty properly is laid at the door of free-market capitalism.
That's interesting. I would have laid it at the feet of our education system, which the Left has pretty much owned, lock, stock and barrel for two generations.
That's probably an entire thread in itself. ;)
