I invested in central air a few years back. With a wife with MS, it's a necessity, not a comfort. Worth every cent it cost.
Of course, unfortunately, I work out in the garage.
I got one of those Toyotomi portable AC units, the kind that has the dryer hose venting to the outside through a window (or in my case, through a vent by the garage door.) It doesn't cool the whole garage to the comfort zone, but keeps it from becoming an oven. Important to me, and important to equipment that likes to stay cool. Deductible as a business expense!
I got the kind of unit that also doubles as a heat pump, so in winter, I get heat from it. About $800, but also worth every cent. In a house, it could probably be moved from room to room with the right preparation.
I do have to dump its little water bucket every few hours. Ends up in the fish pond (hey, fish! Check it out! Distilled water!)
Unfortunately, I don't think they make this kind any more. Try Soleus.
